Transgenic Atlantic Salmon, AquAdvantage® Salmon, (background) and a sibling non-transgenic Atlantic salmon of the same age (foreground).

The genetic modification is the insertion of one gene from a Chinook salmon that produces growth hormone and a promoter sequence from the ocean pout that acts as the “turn on” switch. This gene construct allows the AquAdvantage Salmon (AAS) to produce its own growth hormone all year-round instead of in the spring and summer months.
