The genetic modification is the insertion of one gene from a Chinook salmon that produces growth hormone and a promoter sequence from the ocean pout that acts as the “turn on” switch. This gene construct allows the AquAdvantage Salmon (AAS) to produce its own growth hormone all year-round instead of in the spring and summer months.
