The Ideal Gas Law is a model that accurately describes how most common gases behave within the temperature and pressure ranges in which we live. It was developed in stages over the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, starting with chemist Robert Boyle, who noted the relationship of pressure and volume. Today, the Ideal Gas Law finds expression in the equation PV = nRT, where P is pressure, V is volume, T is temperature, n is the number of particles in the gas, and R is a mathematical constant.
