Case Study: The Genetics of Resistance to HIV Infection

The Infection Experiment
CD4+ cells that are potential hosts for HIV are taken from two control individuals (black squares and circles) and two exposed uninfected individuals (EU2 and EU3; white squares and circles). The cells are mixed with different strains of HIV-1 and viral production is monitored.

These four viral strains fall into two categories:

  • JR-CSF and GT are M-tropic (infect macrophages)
  • NL4-3 and SF2 are T-tropic. (infect T cells)
