Materialism

Businesses have always been trying to target us with the right advertisement at the right time to get us to buy their products. Social media, however, has allowed a new level of access to us through our personal data. As a result, our digital environments in many ways are run through with ads, product placements, and influencers using their identities as personal brands to sell products to us. In this section, we’re going to learn a bit about social media’s role in creating new marketplaces and how that affects our own desire to buy certain products and look a certain way. This is a concept known as “materialism,” a tendency to value possessions, money, and buying products over anything else, and in this section we’re going to explore this topic as it relates to social media.
