About the Experiment

Experiment Title: What parts of a seed are important to growth?

  1. whole red bean
  2. red bean without seed coats
  3. 1/2 bean without seed coat or embryo
  4. 1/2 bean without seedcoat, w/embryo

Experimental Predictions:

I think that 1, 2, & 4 will sprout. I believe you need at least half a seed with embryo for growth.

Experiment Methods and Procedure:

All four were planted in soil and given equal amounts of water.

Results and Conclusions:

1. 5 plants sprouted. They ranged in size from 2 inches to 13 1/2 inches. 2. 5 plants sprouted. The ranged in size from 1 1/4 inches to 14 inches. 3. No seeds sprouted. 4. 2 seeds sprouted. 1= 3 inches, 2= 1 1/4 inches. I have concluded that you need at least 1/2 the seed with the embryo to grow. However, plants are more hardy if the entire seed is planted.
