[Teacher-talknovel] In Search of the Novel #7

Who am I in this Story? As we continue to push our students to read and
make connections, they may want to know and understand how they fit into
the story and which characters they relate to.

How can we help our students see the similarities they have with characters
in a novel? I have had my students make self to novel connections, but I
have never been specific about finding connections with characters. I
think if students can form relationships with the characters, they will see
themselves in the story and understand why they are reading it.

And along the way students can find compassion for the characters. This
can help them with understanding characters' motives and
emotions and personalities. As they find compassion for characters,
perhaps the students can see similarities with the people in their lives
and understand those people a little better.

Students don't understand how much a book can change their lives. It still
amazes me how reading words out of a book can make me think and act so
differently. As students learn this, they will learn who they are in the
novel.
