I use the HOt Zone by Richard Preston to introduce microbes and the immune system. What I do is I read aloud, yes I do, to my 10th graders for the first 5 minutes of class each day for 21 week. Then, at the end of the week, most of the kids are so interested that they will finish the novel on their own. We then all get together after school and watch the movie "outbreak" and talk about the book. Hope that helps!
