    It seems to me that if students aren't willing to openly discuss their ideas,
    then perhaps they haven't gotten to know one another as individuals. Perhaps
    your supervising teacher can skip a few days of short story readings and
    focus on getting to know you activities, and conduct various cooperative
    learning exercises. I believe that, when the students develop mutual trust,
    they will be able to voice their opinions about the subject matter more
    openly and honestly.
