In truth many of the programs that help ESOL students can make them
completely successful in the classroom. Just remember when dealing with LD
or ESOL studnets use more visual cues to indicate meaning. It takes about
two years for an ESOL student to gain even a social fluency with the language
and over five years to have academic fluency. The key to working with these
students is to use visuals, handouts they can follow and most importantly to
immerse them in the English language itself. You may not have the letter
grade success with these students that you will have with the natural English
speaking students, but even a little success moves them closer to academic
language fluency.
