You might be interested in Janet Allen's work. In her incredibly readable
and inspiring book _It's Never Too Late: Leading Adolescents to Lifelong
Literacy_, she writes about how the technique of reading aloud (and its
variations, including shared reading and books on tape) has been crucial to
the literacy development of the at-risk students she teaches. The book is
published by Heinemann, and the section on reading aloud is in Ch. 5.

Subject: [Teacher-TalkNovel] books-on-tape
>I was wondering how many actual teachers use books-on-tape and if you think
they are a good way to get students more involved in the text. I am
interning in Lake Mary where my teacher uses them often and I am trying to
gage how effective they are. What do you think the most effective way to get
a student deeply involved in a novel is?
