One of the novels my eighth graders read is Johnny Tremain. To introduce the novel, they read a newspaper article about the author Esther Forbes. In that article she tells how she wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning Paul Revere and the World in which He Lived during WWII.
She had originally wanted to write about someone who remained neutral during the American Revolution, but because of WWII, she changed her mind and instead wrote about someone who was not one of the significant players during the Revolution. Out of this research developed her novel Johnny Tremain. Both of these incidents, I believe, show how literature can change your life. In Johnny students can truly read about the consequences of their actions.
