d class
growth in reading (especially for those of us in states that are evaluat=
ing
teachers on the progress of their students). It will also give teachers=
 an
idea of what the student can "bear" in his/her instructional reading lev=
el
(comprehending at least 75-80% of text) to the student's independent rea=
ding
level (95% comprehension on own.)Teachers then can guide student's readi=
ng plan
and also determine what tetxtbooks to use in science, social studies, et=
c. The
major precept in reading is to present the students with insstructional =
level
text to promote growth. Follows the same theory as tennis- if you don't=
 play
with someone better than you, then you won't improve. If you play with =
someone
who is world class while you are trying to learn (frustrational level) y=
ou will
just quit. A lot of our kids reach the frustration level and shut down =
when
there is little instructional scaffolding (read alouds, vocabulary intro=
s,
etc.) and they learn to loathe literature.
