Juanita,

An "I-Search" paper is not a formal research paper, but it does ask the student to begin to
find out about a question the student might want answered through reading and analyzing other
materials. Your students' inquiry into families that abandon their children emotionally would
work well for this type of paper. Frankenstein deals with this theme of abandonment.

Students would identify a question like, What happens to children when their parents abandon
them emotionally? Students pick up on this theme of abandonment and rejection in
Frankenstein. So they begin to locate sources related to the question about the effects of
this behavior on children, and they might begin reading chapters in books (sociology,
psychology) or articles in Psych Today.... or sections in one fo the Chicken Soup series.
They take notes on what they are reading and what they are learning from each source. After
they finish reading a number of sources related to their question, they then identify if they
have answered their initial research question, or whether they have shifted in their inquiry.
In other words, they identify what they have learned by exploring, by doing research. They
also identify quotes, paraphrases and summaries from the secondary sources and beginto
identify how this information answers or relates to their initial research question.

Ken Macrorie in the 70s coined the term "I Search" paper. It becomes useful before students
write a formal research paper. This process approach to research gives the students a sense of
control over infomration. For my reading course last semester, I found this type of writing
assignment very useful.

I am attaching a copy of the handout that I had developed. If I teach the reading course
again, I will modify it.

I hope you find the I Search paper useful for engaging your students in the idea of literature
as a lens into our humanity.
