Hurston's - Their Eyes Were Watching God and Mowry's - Rats in the Trees.
Both cover some very sensitive issues; however, my kids have told me about
their real life experiences that make the issues from each text seem
lightweight. The kids actually enjoyed both texts and got into some serious
discussions around the issues. I caught some flack from a few parents, but
teaching in an alternative school environment seemed to buffer the problem.
We were able to convince the parents that the texts were not as bad as they
thought, but were more of a lesson for life.
