                 I was struck by the similarities we could draw or help our
students to draw between the missionaries mistreatment of the clan and their
culture with that of the European explorers and the Native Americans. If I
were teaching an American Studies course, I would relish the opportunity to
draw the parallels through the exposure to good literature.
