Next message: Cheryl Cook: "[Teacher-talkinquiry] Learning science through Inquiry Program"
Hi Kim,
I usually start my units with a KWL chart or a demo to get their attention. I read somewhere that teaching inquiry-based science is like a well-choreographed dance. It is not a free for all with the kids just doing what they want. I started out slow, teaching the kids how to question, respond, test ideas, etc. If they haven't been taught these things it will be chaos. Once they get use to it you can let go more. Is the curriculum you're teaching based on the National Standards or is it something different?

Hello,
Is anyone else out there taking this workshop alone? I wanted to ask
someone about "letting go." I am finding it hard to let go of the
curriculum that I am accustomed to teaching! It is a whole new way of
thinking for me. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting started on a
new unit? How do you start out? Do you just throw materials out there and
let the children lead the way? It seems so foreign to me...
Thanks,
Kim
