What I do is have the students pick their own groups. They know what the assigned point total for the activity is. At the conclusion of the activity the group votes on each person's share of the points. For example, if there are 100 points available and four people in a group and only two did the work then each worker gets 50 points and the two who did nothing get no points. This works really well. Students are much better at motivating each other. And, students quickly learn that they need to work and particiapte or their peers will not reward their lack of effort. Self selecting into the group is important so that they are dealing with friends.
