In our middle school group, we have discussed Levels of Openness in our activities and labs. We have noted as the students have more engagement in designing the activity, they are more apt to retain the information. Even though set - ups of materials have a set method in our minds, students may have a different method to achieve the same results. I have experienced this in some acitivities I have redesigned. The kids have been able to express their findings in student generated data tables and have made applicable graphs that can be easily interpreted.
