Gayle, I couldn't agree with you more about time. Time is a teacher's
enemy--there is no question in my mind about that! But, when I taught
middle school in the not too distant past, I remember thinking that I had
to "cover it all" but found out that if I chose depth over breath that no
"curriculum police" came to haul me away. I was able to teach more of the
"big picture" concepts in a number of different contexts. And the best
part was that my children did no worse on assessment (and a bit better on
"thinking" type questions) than those who were text-book driven and covered
the whole text in a year. I was fortunate to have an administrator who
allowed me to take risks. I guess that is the key as well. Edee
