[Teacher-talkhswriters] Lesson 8 Using computers
Last night I had my students look at our local school website and our ABLE website. I asked what changes they would make, and I thought they had some interesting and valid suggestions. Many of these students were fairly young and comfortable with the computer. However, one said he mainly uses the computer to get game codes.
One suggestion about the school site was that it would be easier to click on the picture of a teacher rather than on the tiny website information below the picture. I don’t know if that is possible, but it makes sense; perhaps that is just more work for the web designer. One teacher included suggested websites for her students to use, so we explored one. It seemed age appropriate and met other website criteria.
Another suggestion was for the ABLE site to include a paragraph about the program, welcoming people, and making them feel comfortable. I thought that was a really good idea. We also noticed that the site did not state that this program is free-something very important to many people. One student suggested it would be better to have the phone number and the “read more” link in a different font color,
We will continue to explore sites at our next class. I want them to look at the learning express library site, and some of the GED preparation sites. This may be very helpful, since our classes are ending soon, and this will enable them to continue to study and practice. It would be interesting to develop a rubric to rate these sites. I don’t know if we will have time for that.
Thanks for all the suggestions from our meeting.
Linda W.
