Surprisingly I have only a few students in my adult who are "computer savvy" I have assignments loaded on Plato that a few take advantage of. I have an essay assignment that four students have completed. I am always searching for material to use on the computers in my classroom ( I have six). Any suggestions?

I am very fortunate to have several desktops and a mobile cart with 8 laptops to use in my classroom. We use the computers in English class frequently.

One of my favorite lessons only uses the teacher computer and screen with projector and speakers. I print out the lyrics to "Believe" by Brooks & Dunn. Then I play the song on youtube. We use this as a start to narrative writing. They see how the songwriter makes everyone understand his message without ever identifying that he is singing about God. We follow up with several good sample narrative writings. Songs are excellent examples of narrative and descriptive writing.

Another of my favorite tools is nicenet. This is a free, easy to use internet classroom assistant. Our adult learners may know how to websearch, email, chat, but they need to know how to use technology for professional and educational purposes... especially those who will be entering any kind of post-secondary training program. Our career center is switching too google for gmail and google apps next year. I am looking forward to using googleapps to share and produce documents with my learners.

I use email for lessons on business correspondence and the learners can do preliminary research online before writing essays. We also use Newsweek, the NY Times, and USA Today online for reading articles.

Next year, our program will be developing a website where we can start blogs for learner use. I will also have students write articles for publication on our class's webpage to share what we have been doing in class.

Sheryl

I find lesson #8 exciting and challenging.?? I love the computer.? I am on it several hours a day.??I play games and take care of a farm.?? I google things I want to learn more about.? I talk to friends.??? But...............my students dont use the computer as much as I do.? Most of them don't even want to know more about it.?
I gave a writing prompt and gave them the choice to go next door to the computer lab or to do it with paper and pencil.? Only one student went to the computer lab.?
Right now many of my students are cramming for the GED test.?? They? really want to know how to write a paper that will pass on the test.??
Here is an aside...........last night? I told them that they can write fiction on the GED writing assignment,? Oh my goodness..............the quality of writing went way up.?
I am looking forward to using a lot of the ideas in the future.? I try to stress that if they are going on to college that the computer is necessary.??? (now to use spell check on this )
Ty for the spell check poem.??? I am looking forward to using it.

MaryLou and I did another lesson from the workshop (forgot which #).? We cut up a paragraph per sentence and had the students recreate the paragraph in sequence.? Some of our writers who struggle with order?also struggled a little with the assignment, but in the end everybody seemed to get the point and enjoyed it.? We talked about why order when writing is important, and how directions would become juggled if not in the correct order.
?
I also just finished?lesson 8 and am excitied?about using the computer more in the GED class.? I often assign homework on the compter for math and grammer (funbrain.com and freerice.com).? Using it more in the classroom just makes sense.? Like everyone else, we are limited in the number of computers available, but can see dividing up into groups?at certain times to use them.? I also use a spellchecker poem to help students practice word processing.? The link is http://latech.edu/tech/liberal-arts/geography/courses/spellchecker.htm.?
