Stephanie and Mary Lou,
Thanks for sharing your classroom activities with poetry. Just having the discussion about what and why they read (and write) was valuable - I think our students don't realize just how much reading and writing takes place in our lives, even if we don't read full-length books. I like your choices in the poets as models - Shel Silverstein and Maya Angelou. Shel Silverstein makes poetry fun and accessible - and something they can share with their children.

Thanks, Stephanie, for the tip on "Poetry Speaks." Is that a lesson you would be willing to share?

Barb and I did a team lesson using poetry. We discussed discussed the reasons why people read which lead to why we personnally read, whcih then lead to what kind of things do we each read for pleasure. We heard everything from statistics, mystery, cook books, the Bible and much more. Not only did they mention what they liked to read, they had to state why they enjoyed that kind of material. It was a very interesting discussion and you could see the students thought process on their face because I don't think they everreally gave thought as to the reasons they enjoy certain styles/kinds of literature. We then used poetry to discuss the differences in writing syles using published authors. We also linked it to the GED (how this lesson will help them on the GED) because our students are so GED focused (even the lowest level students) seem to need to know how this will help them on the GED. So Barb and I made sure to make this connection. We used poetry from Shel Silverstein and!
Maya Angelou because there is such a contrast in the writing such as: language, vocabualry, tone, culture etc... It was amazing to listen to the discussion between the students and how deep some of their thoughts were about the activity. They seemed to really enjoy it.

For April-Poetry Month, I am using a lesson that a colleague
and I developed a couple of years ago. The lesson is titled Poetry Speaks, and
it is based upon a book that is available at the public library. The
book-Poetry Speaks is a wonderful collection of the recorded voices and the
works of various poets/authors from Alfred Lord Tennyson to Walt Whitman and
everyone in between. We listen to a few select writers and read their work,
after a discussion about the work students write a poem about any topic that
comes to mind.

Linda,
Your activity with having students email the city about getting reflective numbers for their homes combined practice of so many skills, from learning the proper format for email, to punctuation and sentence structure - and doing it for a real-life purpose. It's interesting that one of your students didn't bother with punctuation, even when it was on the board in front of him!

Has anyone else tried the computer grading of essays in Learning Express? Having computers score student writing is a hot topic in education these days - some are totally opposed to the idea, while others see it as a tool to save time. As with most things in education, there's no clear "right" answer.
