What a great resource! I have a few students that have demonstrated an interest in digital literacy for post secondary education...and this typing tutorial website makes a nice addition. Thank you!

If your students who are not good typers are interested, there is a free, on-line typing tutorial. If they don’t have computers at home, they could use it at the library. The website is Typingweb at http://www.typingweb.com/ From: teacher-talkhswriters-bounces@learner.org [mailto:teacher-talkhswriters-bounces@learner.org] On Behalf Of LEAH LEAH

Subject: Re: [Teacher-talkhswriters] Workshop 8 I have used the email assignment several times. I was glad to get the email etiquette guidelines. I know my students wont always abide by these rules but they need to know what is expected of them in professional emails. I have a lot of students that struggle to type. This adds to the problem of writing a good paper. I find it easier with some students to stick to pencil and paper. At this point my class is getting smaller because several have tested and passed the GED test. I am happy about that of course but wish they would come back for more writing classes.

Date: Sunday, April 10, 2011, 10:02 AMwe are fortunate enough to have a Smaratboard. While I am still learning, I have used it to write on like a chalk board. I think the students better understand language and math skills because it is large, all can see and the students participate while watching the demo. I know preparing our students for writing in the 21st century is important but the barriers can slow the progress of the integration. Time, money, and equipment present hurdles that have to be overcome. As teachers we will need to think outside the box and create writing lessons that will improve the academic realm of writing as well as learning technology. The computer presents the most obvious choice for lessons. I developed a lesson that looked at email etiquette and then had students respond to a teacher generated office memo email. Students had to access the email account, read the memo, and then reply to the memo using the etiquette rules we had discussed. For many, this was a first experience using email. I liked the lesson and thought it was very worthwhile. The students were engaged in learning at each step. Nevertheless, I did discover that the lesson took much longer than I had anticipated and I will need to remember that as I begin to intertwine technology and writing in the class time that has been set up for writing instruction. Just another examination of the saying “ so much to do ….so little time….”
