For April-Poetry Month, I am using a lesson that a colleague and I developed a couple of years ago. The lesson is titled Poetry Speaks, and it is based upon a book that is available at the public library. The book-Poetry Speaks is a wonderful collection of the recorded voices and the works of various poets/authors from Alfred Lord Tennyson to Walt Whitman and everyone in between. We listen to a few select writers and read their work, after a discussion about the work students write a poem about any topic that comes to mind.
