Today, we used two of the resources from the workshop. Yesterday, we discussed point of view in writing. I used the Famous First Lines handout and had the students discuss whether the line was in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person. I then had them choose which book they thought would be most interesting to them and challenged them to read it. We'll see if they do!
We then read the Gonzalez poem and they wrote a paragraph about how they felt about the poet's thoughts. Interestingly, I had an all male class today, and while I try to avoid stereotypes, we had to spend several minutes discussing the poem as they claimed no understanding.
* I also found sample of writing from Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org<http://www.gutenberg.org>) and the learners read passages and highlighted examples of good writing. We used Mark Twain, Shakespeare, Poe, and from Amazon I found samples of John Grisham and Danielle Steel. We discussed what made these writers "good" even though we all had preferences on which we would prefer to read.
While I have used reading passages many times in the Writing class, this is the first time we have discussed famous authors and attempted to interpret style. We will continue to do this type of thing. Next time, I will use non-fiction authors and we will continue to compare styles as this is more closely related to the writing we do. If anyone has suggestions for which writers to use and where to find some pieces, let me know!
