I learned that I assume too much about my learners' understanding of my essay commentary. For my day class (English 2 students... primarily Transitions students), I have developed an Essay Tracking Sheet for the students and a tracking notebook for my use. Today, we discussed the comments received on past essays, and learners helped to develop the tracking sheet they will use. (Attached) We discussed what comments mean and each learner revised a past essay paying attention to the comments. I conferenced with each student as they worked through the revision to assist in their understanding. Quite eye-opening! As these learners are higher level, I am giving them more responsibility for tracking their essay scoring information.
For my evening class (all GED goal), I will use the GED rubric and create a checklist of skills and commentary. I will also develop a talk-back form to go with each essay. We are just starting a new cycle, so this is a good time to implement these changes. We will work more diligently on developing and using an English notebook to organize handouts, notes, and commentary sheets and to use these as tools for future writing assignments. I will have copies of these tools at the meeting on Friday.
