Stephanie,
I love the idea of a bag of prompts. I'm going to make one up for our classroom

Mary Lou,
I liked the idea of writing about a picture then reading the paragraphs and matching them up with the correct picture.
We have smart boards now and it helps our students to see someone's work projected on the board. It is easier for them to grasp the concepts for writing, seeing it enlarged. They seem to be quickly grasping the parts of speech and punctuation, too.

I have used a similar idea for teaching descriptive writing. I have the students each choose a picture out of a magazine. I have them write a descriptive paragraph or two. When they are finished, we put the pictures in the center of the table, then read the paragraphs aloud while others listen and then identify the picture. I also use this writing piece to teach/review descriptive words/adjectives.
