# Re: [Channel-talkforce] mass and volume enrichment

Yes, indeed!
For enrichment, while studying the solar system, you can also ask them what happens to their mass and weight if they go to the moon or Jupiter. As the moon's gravitational force is 1/6 that of earth, then they would weigh less on the moon while their masses stay the same.

I love that!!! The students will enjoy the literature connection and a clever way to make comprehension of matter fun.

Hi Kristen,

Tell them a story about Archimedes and King Midas' golden crown. How he had to weigh the crown of gold and determine if the King's crown maker was substituting inferior metal. After taking a bath, he ran out and shouted "Eureka" as he determined that the bouyant force on a submerged object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. This method is normally used these days to determined the volume and therefore the density of an irregular object by measuring the mass in air and it's effective mass when submerged in water. This effective mass when submerged in water is its actual mass minus the mass if the fluid displaced. Mass divided by volume gives a measure of density of the object. Archimedes found that the density of the crown was actually less than gold, so it was "Off with his head!"

Dear Kristen

I am ccing Don Deresz who is the mentor for this group--maybe he can respond to this question

Yours is the first email I've received; however, the programs weren't supposed to be viewed until today, so I'm not sure if any emails were sent previously.

One topic I'd like to discuss with other teachers is how to go about having students remember the difference between mass and volume. Do you have any activities or pneumonic devices for teaching mass and volume? How do your students remember the units that mass and volume are measured in?

I normally teach a unit on density, which we spend a lot of time on, before delving into force and gravity. Still, many student struggle with the measurements.

Thank you,
