Could you relieve the tedium by varying the scope and complexity of the
report. Maybe it will be more enthusiastically embraced if the students
believe that each report is simply a "variation on a theme" (no pun
intended) - they know the basic format of a lab report, but each report
focuses on a different area of the report or a different technology
skill.
Let the students know the main focus of each report.
- -In the beginning focus on writing skills and qualitative
observations.
- -A later report could focus on data presentation.
- -Another could focus on quantitative analysis.
- -Some could be done by hand, others by computer. Work on building
computer skills with tables and subscript and superscript.
- -Some reports could incorporate digital images that the students have
taken of their work.
- -Others could include an EXCEL calculation of group data.
- -Others could focus on practical applications or current research.

As I watch the video series, I do not see much evidence of teachers
using
lab reports or lab notebooks. I have my students write at least one
formal lab report per unit of study. I"d like to know if the rest of
you
use lab reports. I'd also like to know if any of you have creative ways
in which you have your students report their lab findings. I'm afraid
that my lab reports become tedious creatures to the students by the end
of
the year. I'd love to hear your ideas on how to refresh this old
practice!
