[Channel-talkchemistry] Reactions in chem. Workshop #4 1st post
The reading assignment ³ Enhancing Problem solving² made the excellent point
of making demonstrations and activities used to reinforcing chemistry topics
a connection to the students world. After defining the problem have the
student(s) make it relevant to them. I am starting a unit on the periodic
table. In order to make the organization patterns of the periodic table
relevant we discussed how grocery stores and hard ware stores are organized.
The usefulness of grouping products and their ability to predict what type
of products are in a specific area of the store. I think it helped. I
enjoyed hearing the students make the connection and I have something to
refer back to as we continue through this unit.
The video reinforced student directed discovery and discussion. From the
water softener activity to the equilibrium activity and overhead
demonstration, students continue to problem solve and make connections to
what their experiences are. I really liked the equilibrium web base
activity. I am planning on using it when my AP chem students start that
unit.
