The mothball demo is a good observation demo. I take a LARGE graduated
cylinder (500-1000mL) and put a layer of Ca CO2 (sorry...I think I said
CaCl2 originally) in the bottom. add water to a 3-4 inches from the
top. then add some small mothballs ( I've also done this with
raisins!) Add some HCl and as it mixes the calcioum carbonate and
hydrochloric will react to release Oxygen. The bubbles will accumulate
on the mothballs or raisins and they will rise up to the top of the
cylinder where the bubbles will break and the mothballs or raisins will
fall back to the bottom and start over! I usually add some food color
to the water just for some interest. A good demo to get the idea of
observation vs inference across!
