When we discuss solutions, the class of course tells me 50ml +50 ml = 100ml.
I show them that 50ml of water + 50 ml of alcohol does not = 100ml. We
discuss why. I have a student measure out 50 ml of marbles in a plastic
grad. cyl. I have a second student measure out 50 ml of small glass beads
in another cylinder. We then pour the beads into the marbles and mix....of
course the volume is less than 100 ml. This allows the students to see how
different molecules take up various amounts of space. Depending on the
class dynamics, we discuss polarity at this time too.
