I like the solubility worksheet intro, I would probably do the lab along with it to show kids what insoluble, soluble and precipitate looks like in real life. Definitely something I will add.
The water testing we actually do in our general science class in ninth grade and we test for nitrates, phosphates, dissolved oxygen, etc. There are some really good water chemistry labs out there from USGS and some other water sites, like Project Wet and Chemcom.We also use the CBL's. We extend the lesson to include some scenarios about mine run-off because of the mining history of our state. We have taken a fieldtrip to go upto some mine sites, taken the tour and tested the water - the kids really liked it. We also go to the mining museum and learn about assaying with mercury and the problems with that. Its a good way to tie in some history with the chemistry!
The alum lab I do in AP Chem, but now I may move it to regular chemistry, because I really liked the way the lab was presented. I really like the way this class shows lessons that I can almost immediately incorporate into my own lessons!
