Geologist Andy Kurtz of Boston University compares two soil profiles, both developed over 400,000 years in the warm climate of Hawaii. By comparing the profile with heavy rainfall with one that is very dry, Kurtz demonstrates the effect of rainfall on the rate of chemical weathering of rock, and therefore, the rate of soil formation.
