Lawrence Yep

Run Time: 00:03:12

Laurence Yep discusses his experiences growing up and shares how reading science fiction and fantasy as a young boy inspired his writing. Yep explains that the heroes in his early stories are aliens or alienated narrators, much like he felt as a boy, growing up in two different neighborhoods. He describes how writing these works helped him develop an emotional vocabulary as a Chinese American. Yep discusses his process of writing historical fiction and explains why he writes about Chinese American history. "History is no more dates and statistics than a skeleton is a person. A real writer of history blows his or her own breath into those bones, and you bring those bones to life," says Yep.
