Abiodun Oyewole

Run Time: 00:10:39

Abiodun Oyewole, one of the original members of The Last Poets, explores spoken word and poetry with high school students in Brooklyn, New York. They discuss the symbolism in "On the Subway," a poem that describes the thoughts of an African American man on a ride uptown as he copes with a white man's prejudiced gaze. Oyewole performs "Jones Comin' Down," an indictment of drug users and the society that creates them. The students read their own poems, inspired by Oyewole works. Says Oyewole, "You have a wonderful paintbrush in your hand when you are writing poetry. You always want to create the image that people can see, smell, taste, touch, or hear and take us on a journey so we can fly."
