The
National Geography Standards
The
National Geography Standards for this program include
standards 1, 8, 9, 12, and 14. You may read in-depth
descriptions of specific standards by clicking on the
links below. All of the standards are available here.
Standard
1: How to use maps and other geographic representations,
tools, and
technologies to acquire, process, and report information
from a spatial
perspective.
Standard
8: The characteristics and spatial distribution
of ecosystems on Earth's surface.
Standard
9: The characteristics, distribution, and migration
of human populations
on Earth's surface.
Standard
12: The processes, patterns, and functions of
human settlements.
Standard
14: How human actions modify the physical environment.
Sao
Paulo: The Outer Ring focuses on the third largest
city in the world and the impacts of human migration.
Many recent immigrants to Sao Paulo live in shanty towns,
a settlement type characteristic of urban areas of the
developing world. The second case study, A Second
Chance for Amazonia?, explores the immense biodiversity
and productivity of the Amazon rain forest. It provides
information on the significant global impact that human
modification can have on natural resources, and also
illustrates how geographic tools and concepts are being
used to develop new policies for resource use and management
in the Amazon.
