Standard 5: That people create regions to interpret Earth's complexity.

Standard 7: The physical processes that shape the patterns of Earth's surface.

Standard 11: The patterns and networks of economic interdependence on Earth's surface.

Standard 12: The processes, patterns, and functions of human settlement.

Standard 15: How physical systems affect human systems.

Standard 16: The changes that occur in the meaning, use, distribution, and importance of resources.

Ecuador: Orange Alert examines the unique region of the Andes mountain range. The strategies that people have developed to deal with natural hazards provide an example of the constraints the physical environment places on human populations. In the second case study, Chile: Pacific Rim Player, the country's unique physiographic variation lays the foundation for a rich agricultural and resource-based economy. These geographic advantages have aided Chile in becoming an important part of today's global economy.
