The National Geography Standards

The National Geography Standards for this program include standards 4, 6, 10, 12, and 13. You may read in-depth descriptions of specific standards by clicking on the links below. All of the standards are available here.

Standard 4: The physical and human characteristics of places.

Standard 6: How culture and experience influence people's perceptions of places and regions.

Standard 10: The characteristics, distribution, and complexity of Earth's cultural mosaics.

Standard 12: The processes, patterns, and functions of human settlement.

Standard 13: How the forces of cooperation and conflict among people influence the division and control of Earth's surface.

Jerusalem: Capital of Two States? explores one of the most colorful and tumultuous cultural mosaics in the world. The confluence of three of the world's major religions in Jerusalem shows how different groups view places and regions differently. The varying attitudes associated with religion go a long way toward answering the question of how cultures shape the character and settlement pattern of a region. In Turkey: Fundamental Change, the video program shows a similar conflict between groups and their perceptions of place by comparing the secular and the religious in Turkey.
