of human populations on Earth's surface.

Lanzhou:
Confluence of Cultures looks at a region whose cultural
past has influenced the history of human migration in
present-day northwestern China and has resulted in a
complex human mosaic. Lanzhou, a crossroads of Muslim
and Chinese culture, epitomizes the complexity of cultural
convergence and divergence. In the second case study,
Shenyang: Hope for China's Rust Belt?, the region's
location, as well as its human and natural resources,
are shown as key to Shenyang's history, as well as to
its hopes for an economic comeback.
