Maps and Gardeners' Comments

The Irish aren’t the only ones celebrating the green of St. Patrick's Day this week. We have an incredible 266 GREEN gardens to celebrate! Last week we had only 200. How many more have emerged since last week? (Do the math!) The tulips are blooming in a number of gardens now, too. Count the red dots on this week's map. Here are some of this week's observations:

March 10, 2009   Morehead City, South Carolina
"Seventy seven out of 100 tulips have bloomed. The tulip blooms close up at night and open up in the sun during the day."

March 12, 2009   Tacoma, Washington
"Last year's tulip leaves were already 9 l/2 inches tall. Our current tulip leaves were between 1 and 3 inches tall. We asked why were last year's growth taller?"

March 12, 2009   St Louis, Missouri
"Disaster has struck! Our tulips emerged last week. We removed the chicken wire so that the plants could emerge freely. In checking our plants today, we discovered that the deer had eaten all of the emerged tulips and the squirrels had dug up and eaten about five of the bulbs. The chicken wire is back in place. The students are wondering if the emerged tulips that have been eaten will end up blooming."

Checking In: Spring at Latitude 45 Degrees North

News from the Latitude Line: 45 North
How are those Latitude Shoes working? If you tried them on and looked down as the earth spun by last Thursday, you would have seen this sight at latitude 45 degrees north in Minnesota:

Take a minute to adjust your predictions for our two remaining garden sites. Re-visit the garden site descriptions to help you predict with more accuracy. Then keep an eye on the maps and watch for gardens in the area to emerge.

This week we have an updated map, new pictures, and more comments from the gardeners. Take a look!
