A Winter Robin: Observations from an Expert
You probably noticed the bits of snow hanging on the bittersweet berries. The berries, which are a good winter food source, are on leafless branches. But did you take a look at those feathers?

Bird expert Laura Erickson says, "The robin looks big and fluffy, like it is trying to stay warm, so you can guess it's a robin on a cold day. It looks bigger and fluffier partly because it actually has more down feathers than it does in the summer, and partly because it has those down feathers fluffed out for better insulation."
