Video Visit to the Molino

Comparing and Contrasting Language and Culture
Use some or all of these reading activities as you view this video about one aspect of life in the Monarch Sanctuary Region.

1) Watch the video about women bringing their corn to a mill to be ground into masa for the day's tortillas.

2) Look closely at each scene and at the video as a whole.

  • What do you notice? (Is there anything you recognize?)
  • What do you think is happening?
  • What questions do you have?

Option: After looking at the video, write one or more paragraphs that you think describe the process of grinding homegrown corn so it can be used in tortillas. Use descriptive words.

4) Finally, compare and contrast how your family gets and makes food with how families in the sanctuary do. Use the handout to the right (or make a Venn diagram) to write your ideas. You could compare these types of things:
  • how your family gets the bread and other foods you eat every day
  • ways that you work with or depend on your community for food

5) Write or tell a partner about what it would be like if your family grew food and worked with others in the community to get it ready for cooking.
