Our
Theme: Surviving the Winter in Mexico
When Journey North begins in February, the Monarchs are at
the over-wintering sites in Mexico. For the first 6 weeks our
theme is survival. This journal is designed to be used while the
monarchs are in Mexico, before the spring migration begins in
March. Through Journey North
News updates, students explore the habitat and climate of
the monarch's winter home. They also learn about the adaptations
monarchs have that help them to survive.

Overview
-
Print a cover for each student and a stack
of journal pages. Journals can be stapled,
bound, or kept in each students' pocket folder to pull out on
"Journey North days."
-
The
map should reinforce for students the geography
of the monarch's annual migration cycle. They can see the location
of Mexico's monarch sanctuaries, and where they are in relation
to students' hometowns.
