How Many Monarchs in the Garden?

There are 8 butterflies, but only 7 are Monarch butterflies! The 8th butterfly (circled below) is a close relative of the monarch. It is called a "Queen." The Queen is found in the southern United States, so it can be confused with monarchs there.

  • Take a close-up look at a Queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus).
  • Now compare it to a Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus).
  • Make a sketch of each butterfly species.
  • How many differences do you notice between the two species?
