Fall Migration Observation Methods Count Monarchs at a Nectar Source Monarchs must find nectar along their migration route all the way to Mexico. You can study migration where monarchs can find good nectar. Where to find monarchs:  in your own butterfly garden along the roadsides; in an abandoned field; in a farmer's blooming clover or alfalfa field; in a native prairie other other wild place; Try to: Count monarchs at the same time of day and for the same length of time each day.
