this photo: These monarchs were in Galeana,
Nuevo Leon (24 N, -100W) last Thursday, October
18th. Try to understand a little of what the observer
said:
"Llegaron
unas cuantas monarcas el 18 de octubre. Las fotos
son del 20 en la mañana; había
miles. Se posan sobre
los pinos, nogales, truenos (Ligustrum), zacatones
(Cortaderia). El 21 en la mañana no había,
el lunes el 22 si, pero salí a las 7 am y
no vi cuantas. Anoche con el viento no llegaron.
A ver cuantas llegan los próximos dias. El
rancho se encuentra en como a 7 k al sur de San
Rafael en el municipio de Galeana."
These
butterflies are the closest to the overwintering
sites of any monarchs, according to reports we have
received. But think: Who else might be seeing monarchs
but not reporting them? This is one of the challenges
of "citizen science." When studying monarchs,
we must even overcome the English/Spanish language
barrier. Measure
the distance these monarchs must fly to reach the
overwintering sites. When do you think the first
monarchs will arrive there?
