How Far to Mexico from Norwich, Vermont?

About this photo:
This monarch is working hard to cross a mountain meadow in
Norwich, Vermont (44N, -72W). It can't glide because it's flying into the wind, so it is using "flapping flight." Monarchs must flap their wings 5-12 times per second during flapping filght. Look carefully. The camera caught the monarch midflight and you can see its abdomen above the wings — an unusual view.

The photo was taken by me, Elizabeth Howard. While this monarch travels across the continent, I'll be your guide through weekly news stories about the monarchs' fall migration. Welcome!
