for Observing the Earth's Daily and Seasonal Cycles

Get Oriented

Begin the Mystery Class Investigation
Build Understanding
The optional lessons below build students' understanding of Earth's daily and seasonal cycles.

Earth's Seasonal Cycles
These lessons help students understand how the Earth's tilt as it revolves around the sun causes the seasons and affects photoperiod (daylength) in different locations. Photoperiod reveals clues about the latitude of a location. These lessons prepare students to see the connection.

Earth's Daily Cycles
These lessons help students grasp what happens as locations on Earth rotate into and out of the sun's light each day. Time of day can reveal clues about the longitude of a location. These lessons prepare students to see the connection.

Practice Skills
These lessons help students practice skills they'll need during the Mystery Class project. To find the ten secret locations, students will calculate and graph photoperiod at each site using sunrise/sunset information. Some familiarity with latitude and longitude will also be helpful. Build and/or practice these skills so you'll be ready:
