Here Comes My Hummingbird!

How close is the nearest hummingbird? When will your first hummingbird arrive?


Each week, record your measurements and predictions on this handout.

Try This!

  1. Click on the current migration map for ruby-throated or rufous hummingbirds.
  2. Look for the dot nearest to you.
  3. Click on the "I" tool and then on the dot to read the observer's report.
  4. Measure the distance in miles from that nearest hummingbird to you! (See tip, below.)
  5. Use the handout (right) to record your weekly measurements and predictions.

Tip: How to Measure the Distance from the Hummingbird to You!

  • Locate both cities/towns on a map. Measure the distance in inches or centimeters. Convert to miles or kilometers using the map's scale bar. OR . . .
